This issue of MRD is dedicated to presenting the major findings of a successful Johannesburg World Summit partnership, entitled: ‘‘Institutional Consolidation for the Coordinated and Integrated Monitoring of Natural Resources towards Sustainable Development and Environmental Conservation in the Hindu Kush–Karakoram–Himalaya Mountain Complex.’’

The ‘‘HKKH Partnership Project’’ focused on creating and applying scientifically informed decision support tools in the Hindu Kush–Karakoram–Himalaya (HKKH) region. The peer-reviewed papers in MRD 30.2 offer insights into the development and application of these tools, reflect on a management-oriented approach to complex social-ecological ecosystems (SESs) in high mountain areas, and discuss experience garnered and numerous types of data collected in 3 protected areas in Nepal (Sagarmatha National Park and Buffer Zone), Pakistan (Central Karakoram National Park), and China (Qomolongma National Nature Preserve).
