The agents of Italian state forest association have found indications of the presence of lynx on the “Monte del Sole”. National park of Dolomiti Bellunesi, in the international year of biodiversity, launched a “referendum” for naming the animal.
After the bear, this is already the second return of grand predator for this national park. The lynx has reappeared in the mountains in the very core of protected area. On the “Monte del Sole”, agents of Italian state forest association, responsible for park surveillance, found unmistakable signs of lynx (tracks and remains of pray). There were several years that this splendid feline left no clues of himself and his return. After the return of the bear over last years, this is a confirmation of the excellent state of healthy environment in the park.
Once, big predators (bear, lynx, wolf) were considered harmful, and therefore persecuted by man, who almost exterminated them. Today, fortunately, the attitude has changed and we have realized that these animals are essential for the proper functioning of natural ecosystems.
The presence of network of protected areas throughout the Alps, and the legal protection these animals enjoy, enabled them to regain their territories in which they use to live, but were driven away by human persecution.
"The presence of large predators - said the director of the Park, Nino Martino - is an important signal. These animals are on the top of the food chain and their arrival is a proof of rich framework of park wildlife and environmental quality of the Belluno Dolomites. After the return of the bear and the lynx, we await the imminent arrival of the wolf!" Director concluded.
The bear, which appeared in the Belluno Dolomites National Park last year, was named Dino, now they must find a name for the lynx. This is why the park board launched a “referendum”, for anyone who would like to name the lynx. They are invited to send their propositions by e-mail to info@dolomitipark.it. The most original propositions will be listed on park’s Internet site, among which, the official one will be chosen. The author of the chosen name will receive a gift from park – a fleece with park logo on it!
