The international conference, which takes place at the 2011 edition of the Sondrio Festival - International documentary film festival on parks, will be dedicated to the mountain parks. A subject on which the event has always been sensitive, even for the geographic location of the city in the heart of the Alps.

Twenty years after the drafting of the "thesis of Sondrio", signed by the participants of the 1992 edition of the Festival, a reflection on the role and perspectives of the parks in mountainous areas is required, in light of the ever present need to balance the tourist development in the highlands with the need for their preservation for future generations. As a ground for further reflection, the new organisation and management of the Stelvio National Park came, that combined with the neighbouring Swiss National Park and Adamello Regional Park represents the most significant protected areas system in the Alps.

The conference will explore some examples of cross-border parks in Europe, North America (Yellowstone National Park ) and Himalaya (Sagarmatha National Park ) in order to trace similarities, differences and exchange opportunities. There are sessions: one related to Park management experience and historical, naturalistic, ethnographic aspects - also aimed at schools; the other is a round-table discussion in the afternoon, where experts from different sectors will attend, who will deepen the most relevant topics, knowing that it is necessary to find common solutions to conciliate the regional development with the need of environment protection, in other words, to contribute to sustainable development.
